5 Seconds of Summer

Chicago, IL – 09.08.2018

5 Seconds of Summer, also known to their fans and countless others as 5SOS, took the stage of the sold out, 5,000 capacity, Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on September 8th, 2018. The incredibly skilled, artistic, and overall mind-blowingly talented quartet, consisting of front man Luke Hemmings, bassist Calum Hood, guitarist Michael Clifford, and drummer Ashton Irwin, first came to fame in 2012 when One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson linked one of their YouTube covers to his millions of followers on Twitter. Since their self titled debut album was released in 2014, the group has sold out countless arenas in multiple countries, including back to back nights at the O2 in London.

Currently touring for their 16 track junior studio album, Youngblood, which is the band’s third consecutive album to hit number one on the Billboard charts, the quartet have far from failed to put on an even better show than they ever have in the past. Having personally been seeing the band since 2015, when they played the 24,000 capacity Ruoff Home Mortgage Center in Indianapolis, and in 2016 when they played the 9,200 capacity TaxSlayer Center in Moline; I can wholeheartedly say that this band have done nothing but truly improve and grow as artists.

Opening their set with the final track of their most recent album, “Babylon”, the entire crowd began to passionately and vehemently back up the vocals of bassist Calum Hood. Continuing on the setlist with other new songs that had never been brought to the live setting before this tour, including “More”, and “Ghost of You”, every single person standing on both the floor and the balcony projected their voices and filled up the entire room with such an awe-inspiring energy. A very obvious fan favorite, “The Only Reason” made it’s live debut this tour for the first time, after being released onto all streaming platforms in 2014.

After exiting the stage and leaving the venue to wait in anticipation for an encore, the group shocked many fans when they made the decision to come back and close out the show with the title track of their most recent album, “Youngblood”, instead of ending with the previous staple of “She Looks So Perfect”.  The quartet concluded the night one final bow as a group, something it wouldn’t be considered a 5 Seconds of Summer show without.

I can not stress enough how much you need to attend this tour if you have the means to do so, even if in the past you have never considered yourself a fan of their music. Youngblood is an album that was written to be performed live, and the band blew any expectations I had for this show out of the water. If in the past years you haven’t jumped on the 5 Seconds of Summer train, now is the time, because they will only be continuing to go up from here.
