On Volume 17 of Acentric Magazine’s Staff Picks of the Week, we bring you everything from fun pop tunes to sweet and soulful acoustic tracks to help start off your summer well. This acentric playlist features the most enjoyed songs played throughout the week, chosen by yours truly. We hope to introduce you to sounds you’ve never heard before and create nostalgia for the tunes you do know.

This week’s playlist features music from LANY’s most recent EP, a peppy beat from Chance the Rapper, and the perfect road trip song from Kaptan!

“ILYSB” by LANY

I guess the new cool thing to do with song titles is to only use the first letter of a phrase to form some cryptic acronym or whatever. Had I not been curious about this song title, I never would have listened to this song, which is actually a pretty lyrically cheesy love song. Cute. Mellow beat. Easy to listen to. Definitely one of my favorites this week. Oh, and it stands for “I Love You So Bad” in case you were wondering, but I should have let you figure that out for yourself. (Angelica Nicolle Abalos, Editor-in-Chief)

“All We Ever Knew” by The Head and the Heart

This is the latest song by The Head and the Heart, which makes me excited for their new album, “Signs Of Light,” which comes out on September 9th. “All We Ever Knew” is the first single from this forthcoming album. Interestingly enough, the song was written during the time of their last album, “Let’s Be Still,” but the band had issues making it just perfect, so they saved it for this album. It has a pretty catchy chorus, filled with “la la las” that’ll make it easy for you to learn. It’s a fairly solid summer bop! (Meghin Moore, Social Media Coordinator)

“What Do You Want” by Emily Vaughn

This is good song, no, a great song. The vocals are incredible, and the lyrics are meaningful. I’m all about anything that promotes valuing your self worth, and this song does just that. LOVE it. (Kathryn Farley, Social Media Manager)

“Cherry Wine (Live)” by Hozier

This song is such a piece of acoustic beauty. I love the live version because you can hear birds chirping in the background of the recording. The track brings such a calm summer afternoon sound to it. It’s also the perfect song to play while relaxing after a long day of work. It can help you unwind while simultaneously connecting you with important memories. I would strongly recommend it! (Erin Wilson, Social Media Coordinator)

“Lisa Baby (Live)” by Walk the Moon

Walk the Moon are such a great live band that their live album, ‘You Are Not Alone: Live At the Greek’ was an awesome decision to release. I highly recommend checking out the whole live album. The ‘Lisa Baby’ performance is one of my favorites, I love the song from their first record and the live version is so much better (listen out for the sick mini-guitar solo towards the end). “All We Got” by Chance the Rapper

It’s been nearly a month since Chance dropped us with some “Blessings” on his mixtape Coloring Book, and there hasn’t been a day where I haven’t listened to at least a track from it. And since I can’t pick the entire album for a playlist, I chose the opening track that features Kanye West and the Chicago Children’s Choir. It’s pretty much the perfect opening song because the beat hits so hard and Chance kills it all the way through the song. It grooves, make you bob your head and then want to rewind it and play it again. It’ll hype up any BBQ or pick you up when you’re falling asleep on the road (me last weekend) or just make your day a little better. (Lorrie Reyes, Writer)

“I Don’t Care” by Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande’s new album, Dangerous Woman, is fire by the way. This song specifically just says screw what everyone else says about you, just love yourself. She says “If I can’t be me then what’s the point” and that lyric spoke volumes when I first listened. This is my favorite sing in the mirror jam to prep for a long day of people sharing their unwanted opinions. I don’t care about it anymore. (Camille Wilcher, Social Media Coordinator)

“Wants What It Wants” by Andrew Belle

I am not a new Andrew Belle fan by any means. I’ve loved him and his music since 2012, and I’ve been gearing up for his promised summer releases by listening to him nonstop. “Wants What It Wants” is my favorite song from his 2013 album Black Bear. It feels like the type of song you drive to in the summer, at dusk with the windows rolled down, as Belle chronicles his mischievous adventures with the person he’s in love with in a slow beat of keyboards and synthesizers. (Briana McDonald, Writer)

“Shatter Me” by Lindsey Stirling ft. Lzzy Hale

Lindsey Stirling is a Dubstep-violinist/ composer and dancer, and damn, she’s got talent. I love this song obviously because the awesome violin skills, but the mix of this classical instrument and dubstep is such a great mix. Especially with powerhouse vocals from Lzzy Hale. Another reason why this song is one of my favorites is because of the meaning behind the lyrics. It’s very inspiring and relatable if you’ve ever had to break free and confront your demons. Give this song a listen; it’s worth it.  (Carolina Rivera, Photographer)

“Everything” by Kaptan

What I like about this song is the energy in it. For me it’s the perfect song to start a road trip and “open up your heart and sing” just as the song goes, and right now more than ever with summer break just around the corner. (Erika Garcia, Photographer)
