Five Things to Know About Dashboard Confessional, the OG Emo Soundtrack

Since 1999, Dashboard Confessional has been churning out gut-wrenching ballads that make you relive your teenage heartache years. Fans were disappointed when the band took a long hiatus, but have since rejoiced after the release of their first album in nine years, Crooked Shadows. The band is currently on tour with Beach Slang and Kississippi, so make sure to catch a date near you! In the meantime, here are five things to know about the band that made “emo” a mainstream trend.

1. Chris Carrabba wasn’t always a musician.

Prior to his success in his numerous musical endeavors (Further Seems Forever, Twin Forks), Carrabba was a special education teacher. He noted that he would keep a guitar in his office and would write songs in his free time.

2. Dashboard Confessional’s music has been featured in TV and film.

Think you may have heard a few lines from “Stolen” during a binge session of One Tree Hill? What about “Vindicated” during Spiderman 2? Dashboard’s music has been credited in 26 soundtracks, some of which include live appearances on talk shows.

3. Their newest album, Crooked Shadows, was recorded in Carrabba’s basement.

Carrabba wanted a more authentic feel to the album, and what better place to feel closer to home than in your actual home? The result feels personal and intimate in an amazing way.

4. Chris is pals with Taylor Swift.

Even I’ve got to admit I was surprised to find this one out! The story goes: T. Swift asked Chris to play her party, and he said yes. She frequents Dashboard shows, so it seemed like a no-brainer. Tay, we’re sure you’ve also screamed lyrics into the void when things get angsty.

5. The band has tried to implement a rule of trying as often as possible to have a female-led band or a band with a woman in the band on tour with them.

Carrabba has spoken out about the marginalization of women in the emo music scene and has made it clear that there are bands he won’t tour with. Score!
