Staff Picks Playlist: Annoyingly Catchy Songs

Let’s face it: there are some songs we love to hate and others that we hate to love. This week’s Staff Picks playlist is full of the latter. Here are ten of our most annoyingly catchy songs and why we’re just so damn conflicted about them.

“Havana” by Camila Cabello

If you own a radio or Spotify, Apple Music, etc., you know this song all too well. Once “Havana” is listened to once, it is impossible to get out of your head. While it is super catchy and fun to sing the “Ooh Na Na’s” I also hate myself for loving it. I have also found that you can take this song and put any word in place of Havana and add “Ooh Na Na” and you have yourself a jam. For example, “Banana Ooh Na Na”. (Keely Caulder, Writer)

“What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction

I say this as one of the biggest One Direction stans, but WMYB is that song. To say I’m sick of this song is an understatement. I reached a point with this song where I never play it on purpose, but yet when it comes on in public, I’m screaming at the top of my lungs. It’s the song that everyone relates One Direction to–even Harry Styles performed it on his debut solo tour–which is probably why I grew to loathe it so much. At the end of the day, though, it’s a certified banger and the world still knows it. (Jordyn Beschel, Editor)

“Everytime We Touch” by Cascada

As soon as the intro to this song plays through the speakers, you simultaneously hate and love life because you know you’re about to go WAY harder than you’re proud of. When that irresistible chorus hits, mild lip syncing is no longer an option- every limb on your body is flailing. Don’t try to fight it, because the song WILL win. (Brittany Isaacson, Editor)

“What Lovers Do” by Maroon 5 Ft. SZA

This song just did it for me…. I hear it everywhere, and when it’s over you can catch me singing “tryna do what loverssss dooooo…ooooooo” over and over again…. UGH! I’m doing it right now as i’m typing…. HELP. (Jay Mendez, Photographer + Writer)

“Great DJ” by The Ting Tings

So let me tell you. This song came out eleven years ago and it’s still at the back of my mind. Feel old yet? Cause I do. (Erika García, Photographer)

“Let Me Go” by Hailee Steinfeld, Alesso, Florida Georgia Line, watt

I’m not one to be too fond of country music, or anything to do with it. I’ve never been able to get into it or understand it. When this song came out I tried to hate it. I really did. But Hailee Steinfeld made it so hard to stay away from it. I love her voice and what she stands for and she can really make any song better. This song slaps (especially the gang vox in the chorus!!!) and I’m not afraid to admit that. It’s a fun summery song that is great to spin in any occasion. (Alex Liscio, Editor)

“Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen

I want to hate this song so badly. Like, every fiber of my being is screaming “What are you doing?! Turn it off!” But it’s just fun to listen to. Maybe it was hearing it every half hour on the radio back in high school that makes me want to hate it, but this song bangs. (Ashton Garner, Photographer)

“Broccoli feat. Lil Yachty” by DRAM

You can’t help but dance to the annoyingly catchy and repetitive rhythm. Also, trying to replicate Lil Yachty’s vocal style is always a fun time. (Starr Brown, Writer)

“Sorry Not Sorry” by Demi Lovato

I am not really a fan of Top 40 pop music in general because I find that most of the music is scary catchy and you try so hard to get it out of your head and you just can’t. It’s the most frustrating thing ever… I’m serious. That being said, I make an exception for this song because as annoying as it might be it is physically impossible for me to not shout along the chorus and feel like a total unapologetic badass while I do it. Who doesn’t love feeling like that??? (Jess Williams, Photographer)

“Happy” by Pharrell Williams

I think I temporarily lost my mind trying to figure out which song was the most annoyingly catchy one I’ve heard. To be fair, I probably didn’t have to subject myself to listening to all of my options about a million times, but hey, I finally figured it out. As much as I wanted to choose Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” or “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, those songs are actually pretty damn amazing and not at all annoying. But THIS song makes me want to scream into the void as soon as I hear it. Yeah, it’s positive and uplifting, but at what cost?! This one’s definitely not on my Feel Good playlist, but I’ll probably be singing it later anyway. Damn it, Pharrell. (Angelica Nicolle Abalos, Editor in Chief)
