Staff Picks Playlist: Late Night Drives

Acentric Magazine’s Staff Picks Playlist feature the most enjoyed songs played throughout the week, chosen by yours truly. With this late night drives playlist, we hope to introduce you to sounds you’ve never heard before and create nostalgia for the tunes you do know.

This week we feature music from M83,  an electronic jam from Night Beds, and a go-to track from One Direction.

“Midnight City” by M83
This has been my favorite summer night song since it was released a couple years ago. It’s also one of those songs that I don’t skip on my iPod or if it’s on the radio. It just has a chill, slightly electronic feel and there’s a sax solo, what more could you want on a summer drive at night?  (Krystina Gabrielle, Photographer)

“Leave a Trace – Goldroom Remix” by CHVRCHES
I first heard this song in early July, and I can tell you the amount of times I’ve listened to it probably comes close to 1000 plays collectively. This song has such a funky vibe to it, it always makes drives easier. I’m the type of person that has a playlist for literally everything, and this is the one song that’s on every playlist I have on Spotify. It has such a disco vibe with it’s instrumentals that give such a good balance to the the singer’s vocals. I’ve got no shame in admitting that I’ve been caught a few times dancing to this in my car, but with a song as upbeat as this one, I really can’t help it! (Idora Yasin, Photographer)

“Had to Hear” by Real Estate
When preparing to leave for Bonnaroo in 2014, I made it a mission to discover as many bands as possible that I would then see at the festival. I found Real Estate, and all of my dreamy-indie-rock-band dreams came true. This song is perfect for me for late night driving because it’s just relaxing, and the rest of the songs from the album all bleed into each other. (Sam Lichtenstein, Photographer)

“Me Liquor and God” by Night Beds
Have you ever listened to a song, and felt like it’s so emotional that it just sticks to the inside of your chest? I originally found this song on my Discover Weekly – thanks Spotify! – and I immediately added it to my summer playlist. The live version is amazing, too. It’s electronic and floaty, perfect for rolling down the highway just over eighty at night with all the windows down. (Liquor not included, though. No drunk driving.) (Briana McDonald, Writer)

“Fake it” by Bastille
This song is perfect for this playlist, the opening lyric is, “drive around, night time, nowhere to go” so need I say more? P.S. If y’all didn’t already know, Bastille’s second album, Wild World, will be released September 9th, THIS FRIDAY, and there is a very good chance that I will somehow find a way to pick every single one of the songs off of the album as my favorite for the following weeks, don’t say I didn’t warn y’all. (Kathryn Farley, Social Media Manager)

“Radar Love” by Golden Earring
This old school Dutch rock band gets me super pumped up. Radar Love makes me wanna jump out of my seat and dance on top of my car like I’m in a Whitesnake video, which I wouldn’t hate. This song has a great chorus, jazzy vocals, and an ever changing lineup of band members.  (Deanna Soukiasian, Writer/ Interviewer)

“Stockholm Syndrome” by One Direction
I think all the editors are in agreement on this one. Actually, I know we all are. This is a go-to track when the three of us are together during these kinds of drives: hanging out, anything goes, and screaming at the top of our lungs. It’s just one of those songs that I can associate with some really great and memorable moments. (Angelica Nicolle Abalos, Editor-in-Chief)

“Precious” by Kevin Garrett
It’s midnight, i’m in my car with the moonroof open and all the windows down, I immediately think of this song blasting for everyone to here. You can feel your heart beating to the rhythm of this song, and it’s the best feeling driving with the wind in your face. Kevin Garrett’s music is the definition of chill vibes and late night drives. (Camille Wilcher, Social Media Coordinator)

“In Florida” by A Day to Remember
A Day to Remember just released their much anticipated album, Bad Vibrations. “In Florida” is my personal favorite off the record. The song is perfect to relax on long drives alone or to sing along to with friends after a good night out. I find that the vibe of the song changes based on my mood. And while you’re at it, you might as well jam the whole album while you’re at it because it’s so darn good. (Brittany Isaacson, Photographer)
