The Wombats are playing a headlining show at The Fonda in Hollywood for their first show of a short west coast run before they head off to Europe not to return until June 2018. They are promoting their new album Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life which is now available for preorder, their newest single “Cheetah Tongue” is out now, give the catchy tune a listen. For the next few nights they have strong support from Nation of Language and FUTURE FEATS, they both warm up the crowd very well for the strongly anticipated headliner, none other than The Wombats.

Nation of Language from Brooklyn, NY take the stage first and the crowd quiets to take in their post punk and new wave inspired sound. Their entrancing keyboard sounds, graceful vocals and underlying beats carried by a bass groove makes for a mesmerizing experience.  Their single “I Thought of Chicago”  sent me into a new wave trance that I didn’t  expect to be in until I was sad it was over.

FUTURE FEATS a Los Angeles based pop band follows up storming the stage and the party starts, a perfect warm up for the night that’s to come. They begin and I am immediately blown away by this electric guitar heavy pop performance. Electrifying energy fills the room, the frontman paces left to right with a presence that overcomes the crowd. Two guitarists tear up the room meanwhile hairflip bass grooves are undeniably contagious.

Anticipation and excitement filled the room as everybody prepares for the long awaited Indie Rock trio from Liverpool. Once again a riled up crowd quiets down once they have taken the stage opening with their new single “Cheetah Tongue”, an incredible dance tune.

The crowd sings along, dances and cheers for what has certainly already shaped up to be a fantastic night. The set consisted of roughly an equal amount of songs from every one of their albums. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a crowd as responsive and so readily excited to dance and sing along to every song. A few songs into the set the “THIS IS NO BRIDGET JONES!” chant during “Kill The Director” is so passionate it’s impossible to resist joining.

The Wombats are an English Indie Rock band that formed in Liverpool, England in 2003. Vocalist and Guitarist Matthew Murphy, Bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis come together and create “driving guitar post-punk and electronic-influenced pop”, described in their Spotify about, which fits perfectly.

I definitely plan on seeing The Wombats the next time they are back in town, as this was my first time and I was so captivated.

The Wombats new record Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life is available for preorder and will be out February 9th, 2018. Be sure to check it out!
