British punk-rock quartet Wolf Alice are making their rounds around America on their current US tour. They’ve taken along continent-mates The Big Pink, giving us all a taste of true English rock music with this tour package. The tour made a stop in New Haven, CT at College Street Music Hall this past week, and though it was quite a cold and rainy night for us, it didn’t take long for the bands to get attendees warm and geared up.
The Big Pink opened up, hitting the stage in a dense, blue haze. The band had a very mysterious yet enticing presence, silhouetted by the monochrome lighting and playing an atmospheric tune. I, personally, had not be well acquainted with the band until this night, but it seemed they had quite a few big fans in the crowd already, rocking out to their popular tracks like “Dominos” and “Velvet”. The three piece had successfully warmed up the crowd for Wolf Alice to take the stage, and certainly gained a few new fans in the process (myself included).
Wolf Alice absolutely lit up the venue the minute they stepped on stage. Though the lighting itself was pretty dim, as it seems the front house lights were out for most of their set, guitarist Joff Oddie came ripping through the stage from the get-go, amping the crowd up for their extensive 19-song set. Vocalist/guitarist Ellie Rowsell’s voice live is electrifying, and even smoother than it is recorded. They played their latest studio album, Visions Of A Life, almost in its entirety, as well as some older hits like “Blush”, “Formidable Cool”, and “Moaning Lisa Smile”. What is so admirable and compelling about Wolf Alice is their music dynamic. Within one night (and through their discography), they showcased their ability to go from spacey and mellow on “Heavenward” to punchy and energetic on “Yuk Foo”. Needless to say, if you are simply a fan of good, authentic rock music, Wolf Alice should be on the top of your list to see.
Wolf Alice’s current 2018 US tour still has plenty of dates left, making its final stop in St. Petersburg, FL in May, including an appearance at this year’s Governors Ball festival in New York City. See below for a list of remaining tour dates.
